Foam
The higher the rating or classification the
better the quality and durability.
For example CMHR 35 is a class S foam and therefore a higher grade
than CMHR25 which is a class A foam.
Some mattresses are made from lower grades than CMHR25
Foam also comes in different ratings soft med and firm. so you
can have a soft foam in a class S rating.
Cot mattresses can come in different thicknesses. generally speaking
7cm mattresses are for occasional use (ie, spare cot at the grand
parents)
7cm thickness is often given away with a new cot.
an Ideal foam thickness is 10cm.
NB We have
now introduced CHRM50 in the new Excellence pocket Sprung Cot
mattress

Covers
These are many and varied some
are mesh or PVC or quilted and some are made of fabrics which
are breathable and moisture resistant. some covers are removeable
and washable. It is advantageous if the cover is breathable as
this will help disperse heat build up from the foam. Recent research
has shown it is also vital to protect the foam from nasties and
hence the breeding of bacteria, look for a cover that is water
resistant, wipe clean and machine washable at 60 degrees. an added
bonus would be if the cover has a zip on three sides so it can
be removed easily.
To ensure that no spillage reaches the core of the mattress through
the cover you can either use a waterproof sheet on the top ( reduces
the breathability)considerably or use a waterproof slider under
the cover. Best to find a slider that is made of NO PVC Material
WE USE SAFETEX
As well as SafeTex being breathable and water resistant it will
also prevent a single fibre(even the size of a hair)penetrating
from core of the Mattress getting through to Your Baby

| Springs
A sprung
core in the mattress has the advantage of giving added strengh
and durability and also helps to disperse heat across the sprung
core. Most good quality sprung cores are made of Mini Bonnel
springs
A recent introduction for the top quality Mattresses is to use
Pocket Springs excelelnt support giving posture control

Stockinette
wrap
Some
better quality foam mattresses with removeable covers also have the
foam core wrapped in a stockinette wrap this makes the covers so easy
to remove as it reduces the "grip" of the foam |
| Soft
feel layer for newborns
This is a relatively new innovation and brought about because
of the new safer way of sleeping babies on their backs. Foam
can be made in soft, med or firm feel with the same support.
A
soft feel layer is probaly more comfortable for a new baby.
than a firm feel mattress, but it is still as supportive. after
6 months there is no benefit to have a soft feel Layer

Anti-allergenic
dust mites
For
a mattress to be anti-allergenic and give maximum protection against
dust mites the cover needs to be able to be washed at more than
55 degrees centigrade. It should also protect the centre foam core
from spillage so nothing can harbour there.

Britsh
standards
All
foam and materials used in cot mattresses have to comply with the
relelvant standards BS1877
|
Antimony and phosphorus
It
was suggested by SIDS that the these chemicals should not be
added to the manufacture of foam We would say all foam mattesses
sold in the UK would comply with this.
